How to manage a VPS?

Hello folks,

Can anyone recommend any tutorials for managing and securing an unmanaged VPS? I have used Linux before, but I do not have much experience.

You can either manage it yourself by using this guide: or buy managed vps from a provider.

You can check your hosting provider FAQ's or Knowledgebase section to learn about managing the Un-managed VPS. Moreover, You can also check videos on different learning platforms or YouTube channel that will guide you accordingly. If needed you can switch to Managed VPS too, if you are not able to manage your VPS server.

You can learn it yourself too if you have the time and will power.

The answer to this really depends on what you plan to do with it and how often you expect to make changes.

As a general rule, there are three main reasons why you’ll want to go in and carry out some server management:

During the initial setup, you’ll want to check that firewalls and antivirus are in place and that all unnecessary features are disabled. This will help to secure your new server and set up you up for success in the future.
On an ongoing basis, you’ll want to regularly ensure that your software is up-to-date. Outdated server software can open your site up to vulnerabilities and even take it offline completely in some circumstances.
As and when you install new software such as a new content management system (CMS) on your server, you may need to play with some of the settings to make sure that it’s performing correctly.
The good news is that you can usually find guides to specific tasks online without too much trouble. The bad news is that if you want to become a fully-fledged system administrator then you’re probably better off taking either an online or an offline course so that you can learn the skills you need to manage your new server.
