Do you need to configure VPS if you subscribe to one

If you buy a VPS hosting, are there server configuration or sofwares you will need to install in the servers or they are straight forward like shared hosting where by you can install your website immediately and it will start working there and then?

I don't think it is as complicated as you make it sound, it functions just like other shared hosting, you just need to learn how to install files there and configuring the domain.
