How to enable or disable the Microsoft Windows Firewall

It's important to have Microsoft Defender Firewall on, even if you already have another firewall on. It helps protect you from unauthorized access.

To turn Microsoft Defender Firewall on or off:

Select the Start button > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security and then Firewall & network protection. Open Windows Security settings
Select a network profile.
Under Microsoft Defender Firewall, switch the setting to On. If your device is connected to a network, network policy settings might prevent you from completing these steps. For more info, contact your administrator.

To turn it off, switch the setting to Off. Turning off Windows Defender Firewall could make your device (and network, if you have one) more vulnerable to unauthorized access. If there's an app you need to use that's being blocked, you can allow it through the firewall, instead of turning the firewall off.

Hello Clarke,

It's essential to have Microsoft Defender Firewall on, even if you already have another firewall on. It is because it helps in protecting you from unauthorized access.

Disabling the Windows 8 or 10 firewall:

  • Firstly, click Start or navigate to Windows Start.
  • Then, type Settings and hit Enter.
  • Now, under the Settings window, click the Update & Security option.
  • Next, In the left navigation menu, click Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
  • Now, open the Windows Security window, and click Domain network, Private network, or Public network, depending on which firewall profile you want to disable.
  • Lastly, click the toggle to the Off under the Microsoft Defender Firewall.

Enabling the Windows 8 or 10 firewall:

  • Firstly, click Start or navigate to Windows Start.
  • Then, type Settings and press Enter.
  • Now, In the Settings window, click the Update & Security option.
  • Next, In the left navigation menu, click Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
  • Lastly, In the Windows Security window, click the Turn ON button for the Domain network, Private network, or Public network, depending on which firewall profile you want to enable.

Thus, I hope the above steps help you to understand how to enable/disable the Microsoft Windows Firewall.
